The story of Les Treize Assiettes Hotel Restaurant
Back in the steam age, the little railway station of Pontaubault bustled with pilgrims and merchants. The former gazed at the silhouette of Mont Saint-Michel in the distance and the latter, from the neighbouring countryside, met up at the livestock market.
The Station Hotel was a welcome place of rest for these two types of travellers. Père Arthur was a perceptive innkeeper and he knew that important matters were often settled over a meal. He started a tradition of serving thirteen dishes at each stage of the negotiations. By the time the last plate was empty, a deal had been done. This ritual gave its name to the hotel restaurant: Les Treize Assiettes (The Thirteen Plates).
For generations, innkeepers have upheld this spirit of conviviality and local tradition.
Today, Sandrine and Christian Rehault keep the tradition alive, sharing memories and tasty dishes in a restaurant where people still enjoy lively discussion while dining, right in the heart of Normandy.
